Amazing guided tour to the worlds famous slums

My experience was so cool - me and 10 more people of my group spent couple of hours being guided in a Dharavi slums, with the full explanation of what’s going on here and there. I highly recommend not to go there alone since the expirience wouldn’t be this much meaningful, clear and nice. So many stories behind that place and so nice when someone local is about to tell you all of them. Thanks a lot, we will definetly come back with other group.

Colorful Dharavi

Authentic Real and Eye-opening

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Mumbai. Although booked through Booking.com the your company running the tour was Youngs in Mumbai. Our tour guide was Mayur who spoke excellent English and showed us around the slum. The tour was breathtaking and unique and very humbling. The industries being undertaken here are like nothing we would see in the UK. Our guide (Meyur) took us on twists and turns around the slum giving us the unedited and authentic experience. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and professional. We will certainly be recommending this tour to others.

Amazing tour!!

This was truly an amazing experience! It was so interesting to see both the commercial side and also where people live. Our guide Rahul had really good knowledge and had a very nice way of showing us around. Would very much recommend to anyone coming to Mumbai - a really special experience!

Great introduction into Dharavi

Mayur showed us around in Dharavi and gave us some meaningful insights in what it means to live and work there. We visited the recycling area, the tannery, the residential area and the pottery quarter. Highly recommended!

Best Experience in Mumbai

When I visit Mumbai, I always want to visit the slums. As I was traveling alone, I was a little worried about going alone, and then I found this tour. Mayur, who guided me on the day, had a really warm and kind personality and carefully taught me about the slums. Thanks to asking me many times if I had any questions and he talked to me friendly, so I was able to ease my nerves, and I was able to ask a lot of questions, which helped me learn a lot. The slums I saw through Mayur were completely different from what I had imagined. Learning about their real lives was a valuable experience that greatly changed my sense of values. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Mayur and team Young tours and travels. At the end of the tour, I went to their office and found the children there. Some of the money we pay is used for their studies(!). How wonderful! I was really impressed. Although it was a tour in heavy rain, I was able to enjoy myself until the very end, and it's been a while since I've had such a wonderful experience. thank you so so so much again. I would also like to book their other tours when I go back to Mumbai, and would heartily recommend them to everyone!

Dharav tour

Very well explained tour. Our guide was a resident of Dharavi, and gave us very in depth knowledge of life here.

First experience at Dharavi

Mayor is our tour guide. He is very friendly and has varieties of information about Dharavi, Mumbai and India. Whichever place we visited, he explained every thing in detail. We did a short tour to commercial and residential area. From plastics manufacturing, leather industry to ceramics business. At the end of tour, the manager invited us to his house and gave small gifts to us. It was nice to see the inside of living places as well. Very good and friendly company, highly recommended.

Was amazing

The tour was really exciting and got lots of information about the place with the help of our tour guide name Mayur. He really knows the places well and very good speaking. We did the slum tour and our guide Mayur was brilliant, it was very interesting to see how so many live and work in this area of Mumbai. Such a great tour. I've always heard so much about this slum and its impact on culture and economy of Mumbai. It was great to get insight from a local and learn about all the great things that are happening in this part of town that visitors would normally not go near. A truly immersive experience, which anyone visiting Mumbai should find time for. Both my children (11 & 14) found the tour so insightful with one describing it as “absolutely mesmerising”. Unique tour

Super interesting tour of Dharavi, the unique district of Mumbai you should not miss it! Our tour guide, Mayur enthusiastically explained everything in great detail. We were impressed by his knowledge and the ease with which he spoke English. We were glad we chose this tour operator as it was most professional, easy to communicate with, and very, very friendly. As a bonus we were invited to join a family wedding. We were not able to stay but the memories will stay with us forever.

So complex but possible to understand with guide

The guide Dev was very friendly and well considering us for safety, understanding and satisfaction. He spoke slowly to adapt to our language skill. We felt his professionalism and enthusiasm for our satisfaction. Thanks to him we learned a lot about the slam. It is so complex not only the geographic organization but also the context and the environment. Difficult to understand but possible with the guide. Very interesting. I strongly recommend.

Ethical Tour

My husband and I were worried to take a tour of Dharavi because many of the ads seemed exploitative of the community, but when we read the description for Young Tours and Travel we felt confident to go with them because it was described in a respectful and considerate manner. The guide showed us the commercial and residential sides to Dharavi and ended with an afternoon tea in his home. The tour was comprehensive, educational, interesting, and most importantly, it didn't try to exploit the community members or promote "poverty porn". We enjoyed our tour and would recommend this company over others listed on Booking.com.

Great tour if you want to get to know about slums

We really enjoyed the slum tour! It was good to get to know about the life in slums and walk around the area. Vishal is a great guide and was happy to answer our questions. It’s also good to know that they support some educational program through profits from the tours so that people in area can learn new skills. They have a classroom for the projects. Overall it was an unique and colourful experience to get to know a bit more about slum life- recommend as a must if visiting Mumbai. Vishal also kindly offered us some chai which was delicious! Amazing Slum Tour

Our tour started well and ended beyond our expectations. Extremely interesting and our guide had a deep knowledge of both the commercial and residential side of the slums. Like everyone we are keen to take photos but apprehensive in this environment however our guide encouraged us to take pictures in a sensitive manner. The highlight was an invitation back to our guides house to meet his family we were extremely honoured. Thank you so much from Scott and Margita.

Professional tour, above what you usually get in India

We did a group tour with Vishal. The most important thing to highlight is that he was very professional, meeting international standards of guiding. He was punctual, accommodated our time (morning coffee at the meeting place) and walking pace. The guiding had a very good structure and elaboration with factual basis and was delivered in perfect English. There was not a single dead moment and even though we imagined that 2 hours is too little, we were surprised how well the tour was filled with explanations, sights, stories, photo moments and hands on activities (e.g. pottery). We also felt very safe in the places we visited, both because the nature of those places was well chosen, as well as the accommodating nature of our guide. Since this is India, where a lot of guiding is of poor quality and you get non stop pressured to do this or that, it's important to also highlight that we were not pushed in any way to buy something or tip someone and we had proper visibility of what's going on and the freedom to do what we consider appropriate. The guiding focused on the two areas of the Dharavi slum, one on the working part and one on the residential part with additional pottery home industry in the vicinity. It included photo sessions, access to local industries and slum life (e.g. barber shop, cooking). Points to improve: a) Some of the statistics data used in the presentation was inconsistent (e.g. number of people in the slum, estimated turnover, density of the slum, surface of the slum). This kind of information may not mean much to most visitors, but they add appreciation from people who are used to numbers and can appreciate such details. b) The money information provided (e.g. rental costs) was confusing due to the incorrect translation of lakh and crore into international numbers. We didn't insist on this, but it's good to review this point with all your guides. This is a common issue in India.

I really enjoyed the tour and got a little glimpse of India I don’t usually see

I joined this tour and the guide was Sagar, who is a student and lives in Dharavi. Sagar started the tour with a quick explanation of the itinerary and aims of the tour. I thought Sagar was, knowledgeable, informative, spoke excellent English and polite, and the tour interesting. The most interesting thing was that the word slum is perhaps a misnomer. The Dharavi Slum is really just like most of India, just more densely populated, and almost like a self enclosed community with shops, markets, textile, recycling and pottery industries. Overall, I really enjoyed the tour and got a little glimpse of India I don’t usually see. When I see how hard people in Dharavi work, it makes me grateful for everything my country has given me.

Super interesting tour of Dharavi slum

Vishal was an excellent, knowledgable guide who explained how life went on in the slum area where grew up and still lived. He spoke excellent English and treated us to the real tea of India, a special slightly spicy with ginger version of chai - delicious. I thoroughly recommend this tour

Great experience

Vishal was our guide in this walking tour of the largest slum in India. He is a Dharavi native and gave us a great walk of this area, including a tasting of chai that was really amazing. We had so many questions that only a local would be able to answer, we really enjoyed walking the narrow passages and getting to see how these folks live and work in this environment. Highly recommended.

The slums tour

For me it was all I could have ask for- great guide, solo tour, informative and satisfying. The tour takes place in "real world" neighborhoods, exposing you to some special experiences. I had "Vishal" as my guide- he is just great, friendly, good english speaker, and full of knowledge. Very recommended.

This was such an educational and inspiring tour showing so many different sides to Dharavi. Vishal was an excellent guide who was local to the area so had lots of interesting insights and wad very good company. He talked me through the history and geography of the slum and even treated me to a cup of special tea! I couldn't recommend this more highly.

The group tour of the Dharavi slums was super cool, Vishal was an amazing guide who resides in the slums himself and has a lot of awareness and knowledge of the environment. He was very thoughtful and paced himself with his explanations well.
